"A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist." - Louis NizerWelcome to the Design Atelier. Above, there is a photo that my son, the photographer Jesse Gerstein, took of me when I was living on the Côte d'Azur with him and my younger son, Aram Gerstein, who is also a fine artist. ( In fact, the three of us put together a joint show at a major museum some years ago. ) We lived in the mountains above Nice, France. Jesse took the photo above because he said that everything in it had been made by me. As an artist, I find that I like to make things for myself and other people. (Some of these things can be purchased, and others can be commissioned, in replica.) And so, here are some of the things I have designed for everyday use:
Athos kitchen table: Seats two Greek peasants in perfect comfort.
Full sized feather quilt comforter, made with Italian silk fabrics.
Antique fabric pillow.
Primitive candle holder made from an old handforged railroad spike garden hoe. Turned upside down finds new life!
Handmade French breadbag. Just right for keeping a baguette.
Front & Back:
Painted Wooden Folding Screen. (1.84 x 1.84 meters) Loft becomes garden!
